Four situations where
a pump station is required
The treatment system is uphill from the property
If the site layout means wastewater needs to travel uphill to reach the septic tank or treatment plant, it can't do that by gravity. A pump station at the low point lifts it to where it needs to go.
The drainage run is too long for gravity
Even on a slight fall, a very long run of pipework can lose too much head pressure to drain reliably. A pump station partway along maintains the flow and prevents backing up.
The discharge point is remote from the property
Treatment plant effluent needs to reach a watercourse or soakaway that may be some distance away. Where the terrain doesn't allow gravity, a pump station gets it there reliably.
Retrofitting drainage to an existing property
Older properties or conversions where the building layout and ground levels weren't designed with drainage in mind. A pump station often solves what can't be fixed by re-routing pipework alone.

The type of pump station you need depends on what it's pumping and where it needs to go. We specify the right one for your site at the survey stage.
Sewage Pump Station
Handles raw sewage from the property before it reaches the treatment system. Used where the tank or plant is uphill, or where a long rising main is needed. Sized for peak flow rates and fitted with twin pumps for reliability.
Effluent Pump Station
Pumps treated effluent from a treatment plant to the discharge point — a watercourse, soakaway, or drainage field — where the outlet is uphill from or remote to the plant. Handles cleaner liquid, typically smaller pumps.
Commercial Pump Station
Larger installations for commercial properties, holiday parks, caravan sites, and developments. Higher flow rates, larger chambers, duty/standby pump configurations, and SCADA-compatible control panels where required.

We assess your site, check proximity to watercourses, review access, and tell you which system is right — no charge, no obligation.

System specification
We size the plant correctly for your property and usage. An undersized system will fail — we don't cut corners on the calculation.

EA notification & permit
We register the installation with the Environment Agency and obtain the permit to discharge. A legal requirement — we handle it on your behalf.

Excavation & installation
Our team handles all groundworks, plant installation, inlet and outlet pipework, electrical connection, and backfill.

Commissioning & testing
Excavation, new tank or treatment plant, all pipework, drainage field or discharge connection — fully installed and tested.

Building Control sign-off
All documentation provided. We manage the Building Control process so you get the completion certificate your solicitor needs.
Worth knowing
We always fit high-level alarms as standard. If the pump fails and the chamber fills, you'll be alerted before sewage backs up into the property.
For domestic applications, a dual-pump (duty/standby) system is recommended — if one pump fails, the other takes over automatically. We'll advise at the survey stage.
Pump stations need periodic maintenance — pump inspection, float switch check, chamber clean. We offer service contracts covering your pump station alongside the wider drainage system.
A pump station is often specified at the same time as a septic tank or treatment plant installation. We design the whole system as one — not as separate jobs bolted together.
